When You Have Itchy Gums

Chances are, if a friend or co-worker explains that their gums are itchy, you might be tempted to think that they are a bit strange. Yet, there is little mystery behind this weird sensation. Thus, if you’re experiencing a tickle or tingling in your gum tissue that is becoming itchy and uncomfortable, it’s important to contact your dentist for an examination. In reality, there are several potential causes of itchy gums.

It’s no secret that the human mouth contains bacteria. Most also realize that these bacteria team up with sugars to form plaque, a sticky, colorless film. While most understand that daily brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups, removes plaque, few are aware that plaque build-up can cause gums to itch. Similarly, excess plaque that leads to early-stage gum disease or gingivitis can also lead to itchy gums. Again, this is due to irritation and inflammation of the gum tissue.

On the other hand, allergies are yet another potential cause of itchy gums. For instance, suppose an individual eats something that they are allergic to. In this case, the person’s reaction might include itchy gums. In the same way, individuals with severe reactions to certain sources of pollen (birch or ragweed) might claim that their gums feel itchy.

On occasion, itchy gums might be a component of healing. One example is when an individual has their wisdom teeth removed. This is one reason why dentists and oral surgeons suggest rinsing with salt water following surgery, as this is one way to soothe irritated and/or “itchy” gums.

Given that plaque build-up, gingivitis, allergies and post-operative healing can lead to itchy gums, it’s clear that itchy gums are not so strange after all. Thus, if you are experiencing an itchy sensation, rest assured—you are not alone.
