Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and Joint Pain

Affecting more than 3 million Americans, Temporomandibular Disorders, or TMD, are characterized by pain in and around the temporomandibular (jaw) joint. It’s believed that any traumatic, metabolic, or psychological stimulant can contribute to TMD, yet the main cause remains unclear. Even so, dentists have noted that teeth grinding, arthritis, and stress may contribute to TMD and joint pain.

To better understand, the temporomandibular joint sits within a small impression of the temporal bone. The mandible, or jawbone, also fits here. By placing your fingers in front of your ears while opening your jaw, you can feel the temporomandibular joint on each side.

With several structures to consider, including the teeth, sinuses, and neck and back muscles, all of which share nerves with the temporomandibular joint, it is not always easy to classify TMD.

TMD: Common Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness in the face, jaw joint, ears, and even neck and shoulders
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw Muscle fatigue in the face
  • Pain or discomfort while eating or speaking
  • Swelling on one or both sides of the face
  • Earache and/or ringing in the ears
  • Headaches and/or Dizziness

TMD: Treatments

If you suspect that you are suffering with temporomandibular disorder, it’s a good idea to see your dentist for a checkup. Other dental concerns manifest themselves in similar ways. Thus, only a dentist can determine if TMD is to blame for your pain. In the meantime, here are a few home remedies that may provide some relief:

Medication – Ibuprofen, as well as other over the counter anti-inflammatory medications, can relieve pain and possible swelling.

Cold and Warm Packs – Apply an ice pack to the side of your face for 10-15 minutes, and then follow up with a moist warm pack for 5 minutes.

Watch What You Eat – Opt for soft foods that do not require heavy chewing. Try to avoid crunching ice.
